Be Better Informed – October 2009

Our monthly shout out about what’s buzzing in the Better studio.

The TyneTeesTwestival

The TyneTeesTwestival is all about people. We’ve got to say a big big thank you to some high energy people who stepped up to the bar to help deliver the event. Aoife, Li, The Sharpe ladies, Laura M, Oli, The Frii Spray guys, Amanda and Chris for the pictures and the Sailor Girls. Our sponsors were generous, our host was accommodating and people had a good time; drank, ate and gave their money for charity. Every team needs a leader and Aoife, who despite illness, unescapable trips away and a full time job managed to pull us all together and make us work as a team. Around £1,400 was raised which will go to support Teesside Hospice and NECCR (North East Child Cancer Research), the events chosen charities. Again there’s pics a plenty below, so go take a look….in a bit!

We’ve also been heavily involved in supporting the upcoming ‘Touch of Class‘ Ball which will be held at the MFC Riverside Stadium this evening. Now in its 4th year, the event goes from strength to strength, with previous events having raised nearly £60,000. With only 200 tickets available and some high profile names already on the guest list, it’s an exclusive event not to be missed! (more…)

Living through a revolution

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

I read a piece recently by Clay Shirky, who in a blog post entitled ‘Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable,’ reflected on the nature of revolutions. Periods of time when old ‘stuff’ was no longer relevant to us and new ‘stuff’ couldn’t come along fast enough to replace it. That feels like now doesn’t it?

The edges of our media space are expanding faster than our ability to make sense of them, of new technologies, of how people use them and of the shake out, that will mean some old media will fall by the wayside.

But this is an unravelling story seen from two very different perspectives. The user, swept along by the rush of the crowd to try new media, to make that media fit their lifestyle and the marketer, trying to position a brand where its’ target customer is. (more…)

PHP/MySQL Developer needed to join the Better team

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

On the back of winning some exciting digital projects, the Better team is growing again. We are looking for a talented and exciting PHP/MySQL web developer to join us. You can have previous agency experience or be fresh out of Uni, as long as you meet the grade.

The web developer role requires demonstration technical ability but more importantly the passion required to forge a career in digital media that by its very nature requires continuous learning. You should have a love for all things web. You will see web projects as being not only design and functionality, but also understand the marketing and communication requirements for the project (including SEO). We are looking for a motivated self-learner, who finds code and problem solving interesting. (more…)

Our monthly shout out about what’s buzzing in the Better studio.

If We Can You Can Challenge. ‘The Winners’.
Sadly Mark didn’t win (Congrats BTW to Craig Smith, Ian Smith, Esther Dingley, Steven Smith, Ray Liddle, Louise Bell, Rob Earnshaw and Ralph Thompson) but a keenly contested challenge gave us a lot of valuable coverage and goes to show that just taking part in the challenge can help a young business raise it’s profile. A lot of friends, clients and peers took the time to support us so here’s a big shout out to all the good good people who took the time to vote for us. Just being in the company of such dynamic businesses makes us feel we’re doing the right things and people see us as a company worth following. (more…)

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Jun 8 2009 by Karen McLauchlan, Evening Gazette.

THE search to find Tees Valley’s next entrepreneurial star is just days away from revealing a winner. The nebusiness backed If We Can, You Can challenge recently named its two local finalists Louise Bell, a 36-year-old, from Stockton, who set up Healthy Glow, a home spray tanning business, and 31-year-old Mark Easby, from Middlesbrough, who runs Better – a creative brand agency.

The Entrepreneurs Forum Annual Conference Experience

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

From Mark’s IfWeCanYouCan Blog.

What a day. I’ve been lucky enough to attend a few Entrepreneurs Forum events before, including one annual conference but none have been as inspiring or interesting as this one.

The speakers were first class. As a young business, it was very interesting to listen to presentations from the likes of Matthew Riley (Daisy Communications), Martin Lightbody (Finsbury Foods) and Richard Farleigh (Dragon’s Den) covering their experiences, both good and bad. It was inspiring to hear about the challenges, issues, and opportunities that have moulded them and their businesses while trying to apply the lessons learnt to our context.

It was also really good to meet the other finalists for the first time. It certainly seems like a great bumch of people and we will certainly be maintaining contact with some of them once the campaign has reached its climax.

Both the main conference, and the following dinner were great experience especially as there were a number of activities lined up for the finalists throughout the day (and night). These included photo shoots, audio comments and video interviews as well as being asked to stand up in front of the conference audience to be highlighted as the ‘ones to watch in the North East’, and ofcourse the Better team got “punk’d” on the evening from Diva’s Incognito….so thanks to the EF team for making us feel a little like pop stars (we even had our own custome badges!).

Here’s looking forward to next year…

The end of a crazy week

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

From Mark’s IfWeCanYouCan Blog.

Well, its been a crazy week. Its now over a week since the finalists where announced and time has just flown by.

Not only have we been hectic in the business working on a few proposals and the studio has been working all hours on client projects, we’ve also been trying to embrace the increased profile and new experiences that have come from being part of the IWCYC Campaign.

After just getting used to being featured in the local paper, The Evening Gazette, a number of times over the past week I was also asked to do a interview on BBC Radio Tees early on Friday morning. Although this is very exciting, I must admit it was pretty nerve wracking. It is now available on listen again on the BBC iPlayer website if your interested. I thought we both did a sterling job considering it was our radio debut!

…and then came the Entrepreneurs Forum Annual Conference…as mentioned in the other post (see below) this was an experience and a half! Photo shoots, interviews, drunken ‘divas’ as well as a number of people we didn’t know congratulating us and wanting to speak to us. What an experience.

So I am now wondering that the next few weeks will hold for us. No doubt we will continue with our day jobs and our work in the studio and look forward to some more new experiences to come. I’ll keep you updated as and when they do…

NEBusiness.co.uk – True Grit

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Apr 7 2009 by Jez Davison, Evening Gazette – view article online.

MARK Easby had to face his mum’s cancer and a confidence crisis before becoming Tees Valley’s king of communications. JEZ DAVISON discovers how the Big ‘C’ transformed his life

THE year is 2000 and a young Teessider is caught in a crisis. Former college drop-out Mark Easby had just scraped through university with a third class honours degree before being crushed by the death of his mother Gwyneth from leukaemia.

With confidence and motivation at rock bottom, he decided the only way was up and embarked on a post-graduate qualification “as much for my mum as for myself”. (more…)

Better getting bigger as more digital experience comes on board

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

We’ve looked long and hard for the right person to be the cornerstone on which we build our web development offer. Our criteria was pretty big. We wanted someone who had buckets of big agency experience, who had spent a considerable amount of time working through the product development cycle at the very highest level and who could shape how we offer web development to our clients.   (more…)
