Design Education – The Next Creative Generation
Date:
08/05/2013

Are you born with a creative mindset or is it taught?

In 2012 we heard that the government was strongly considering the removal of design-related subjects from the school curriculum with the introduction of the new EBacc. The concern was that at its very worst this could result in the death of UK creative industries, which currently employ around 2 million people.

A talk entitled ‘The Next Creative Generation’ at Cheltenham Design Festival addressed this topic and encouraged debate amongst attendees, all of whom are engaged in some kind of way in the UK creative world. Speaking at this talk were Sir Christopher Frayling – Professor at RCA, Tim Lindsay – CEO of D&AD and Adrian Shaughnessy – writer for Eye, Creative Review and Design Observer (Chair) – three extremely passionate and inspirational personalities. The visual story of our Cheltenham Design Festival experience
Date:
17/04/2013

We booked our tickets early for the Cheltenham Design Festival and couldn’t wait for the event to come around. When it did we were not disappointed.

We took the road trip down and soaked up every bit of the atmosphere, enjoyed some networking with other creative thinkers, and helped celebrate how original thought can change the world. The promise of inspiration was delivered in style through the diverse mix of studio events, auditorium presentations, and interactive discussions sending our team back up north full of ideas, feeling motivated and brimming with creativity. Better inspiration and influences: Edition 1.
Date:
15/06/2012

We are always looking through blogs, magazines and keeping an eye open to the creative ‘goings on’ around us and we thought it was about time that we shared some of the things that inspire, influence and encourage us.

So, this is the first in, what will hopefully be, a weekly compendium of the things we’ve seen and experienced; those things that we love and those things that we have an opinion on.  (more…)

We are always looking through blogs, magazines and keeping an eye open to the creative ‘goings on’ around us and we think it’s good to share the things that we’ve seen and talked about in the studio over the last week or so.

The Solar Annual Report.

Simply putting picture up to show this amazing piece by ServicePlan for Austria Solar wouldn’t have done it any justice. The end result of this annual report brief won a Golden Lion at Cannes recently and it quite simply blows us away. Absolutely stunning!

Something a little out of the ordinary.

Stair Rover by Po-Chih Lai at Show RCA 2012 from Dezeen on Vimeo.

Royal College of Art graduate Po-Chih Lai has designed a rugged eight-wheeled skateboard that can roll down stairs. We had to put this one in just for how cool it is and how it takes the well established concept of a skateboard and flips it on it’s head. All of a sudden an object that has changed very little over the last thirty years evolves.

Waldo Trommler Paint

This vibrant and colourful rebrand of Waldo Trommler Paints by Reynolds and Reyner simply jumps off the pages and as soon as we saw it we knew we had to mention it. For such a traditional market sector we loved how the essence of the brand focussed purely on the variety of colours available within the paint range.

Sarcastic Street Art

Sarcastic Street Art by Mobstr

UK Based Street Artist Mobstr is beginning to gain a reputation for being the next big thing in urban art. His (we say his, we’re not sure it’s one person let alone what sex they are) work focusses on simple sentences that are designed to make you think. Minimalist in nature they are often loaded with meaning, or at least, a little attitude.

Adidas Design Studios

We love this simple and effective new design for the Adidas Design Studios. By Making use of beautiful large images combined with paralaxing elements, what at first viewing appears to be a very ‘flat’ design suddenly comes to life once the user interacts with it.

Sofia Branding

This is a lovely branding effort by Studio Anagrama comprising of a custom font and identity created for Sofia, a building designed by architect Cesar Pelli for One Development Group. Located in San Pedro, Mexico, this building not only was designed by an internationally renowned architect, it also has the most generous specifications in every aspect: from automated appliances, to Leed certifications.

The task was to communicate such sophistication and exclusiveness to their potential buyers. Therefore an identity was created that was the exact opposite of what we usually see for this kind of project.

Hacker Group Self Promotion

As a direct marketing agency, Hacker always push to make a big impact right from the start. With this new-business package directed at health care industry professionals, they chose to marry art with tangible facts in a larger than life way. Using a custom-designed corrugated gate-fold mailer (instead of a standard tube), they stressed the opening experience and lasting impression a series of nine fact-based posters would make in industry professional’s offices.

Basically, we absolutely love this. Engaging with print is one of the most rewarding things and we’re sure that those lucky enough to receive this were delighted.
