ArtsBank approached Better to work on a promotional brochure selling the works and commissions of one of their highest profile artists – Ray Lonsdale.
Ray’s work covers a broad range of sculpture that culminates in the superbly executed “giants” series which are almost 4 times normal human size.
The team at decided on a solution that played heavily on the industrial nature of the medium with which Ray works – steel. The pages were adorned with rust textures and all of the images contained had rough edges applied to them.
With typography playing a part on each page through both content and the identity created for Ray, the creative team wanted to juxtapose this with the delicate hand writing of the artist and used his own words and sketched to describe the pieces.
The brochure used a selection of layout styles that allowed us to display smaller pieces in a more condensed format whilst leaving the larger pieces to take centre stage.
The document was bound using brass screws. Not only does this fit in with the industrial feel of the artists work but it also provides a practical application that allows for additional pages to be added into the document at a later date.
