Literacy at the speed of sound

The Brief

Sound Training came to us with a renamed literacy learning product and their own brand story, but they still needed new names for their suite of products, a distinctive logo and design system and an all new digital presence. With a presence in over 700 schools worldwide and over 70,000 lives changed by this product, it was time for a more mature brand that could help them go even further.

Background

Lexonik is a literacy teaching programme by Sound Training. Using a fast, focused and fun methodology it increases reading ages by 27 months in just six weeks. Students develop the ability to figure out what they need to do for themselves, making them an independent learner, not waiting to be spoon-fed or at a loss when not provided with the answer.

The Solution

This project didn’t have a traditional DISCOVER phase but that didn’t stop us getting first hand understanding of the product we were branding. By sitting in on a demonstration of the Lexonik methodology we learnt vital details about the way it works. Understanding the way words are broken down and taught in Lexonik allowed us to reflect their methodology visually in their brand, creating a striking, simple but uniquely relevant look.

Sound and vision

Lexonik’s portmanteau name, fused from lexicon and sonic, along with Sound Training’s desire to be visually clear and easily decoded, meant that we needed to literally ‘see what they were saying’. This meant the logo had to very simply and very clearly depict words turning into sound. We created a simplified icon that not only depicted a page of text morphing into a sound wave but also sat perfectly aligned above the component parts of the wordmark.

More than the sum of its parts

A core part of the Lexonik learning technique revolves around breaking words down to the their component parts. This allows learners to understand the sounds these building blocks make and also aids comprehension of what these root elements mean. When readers encounter the same sound or root in another word, even one they haven’t seen before, they can not only see it and say it they can understand it. Retaining the flowing Lexonik line from the logo and weaving it into a visual representation of the learning technique allowed us to build a recognisable and relevant visual style for communications.
